Buildings and monuments of Cultural Heritage represent a country's history and tradition,
for which reason they must be preserved and in some cases restored. Both conservation and
restoration rely on a complete process of investigation and multidisciplinary dialogue, amongst
which the monitoring of structures stands out.
Monitoring provides the essential information needed to determine the state of
conservation of the structure, to foresee risk situations and to anticipate the deterioration of
heritage. Having said that, monitoring structures is necessary. However, the high cost of
conventional techniques prevent their applicability.
In this context, the present project deals with the design and a proposal of installation and
execution of a monitoring system, using low cost resources at the Santa María del Mar Basilica
in Barcelona. The aim of this system is to monitor two cracks that are in the Basilica to be able
to reach a conclusion about the phenomenon that generates them.
In the first stage of the project, the initialization, responds to the issues that are necessary
to be clear before the beginning of the design: project requirements and stakeholders needs.
The second stage is about the design of the system, specifying the sensors and data
acquisition system that are used, both with low-cost devices. In this case, three different sensors
are used: light sensor, temperature and humidity sensor and displacement sensor. With regard
to the data acquisition system, it is done using Arduino boards, specifically the Yún model (as it
has a WiFi network). In this phase, the system is also tested on an experimental structure, with
the objective of ensuring its correct functioning before translating it to Santa Maria del Mar.
Once the test has been done and the operation of the system has been verified, the third
phase consists of outlining the proposals for the installation of the monitoring system in the
church, making some readjustments to its real needs and conditions.
Finally, the fourth and last stage establishes the best practices to be performed during the
execution of the system, including the maintenance and continuous evaluation of the system,
the management and interpretation of data and, finally, the presentation of the data obtained.
To present the data, a project of dissemination and visualization of the Cultural Heritage is
realized through digital fabrication techniques, 3D printing and light sensors, applied to the
facade of Santa Maria del Mar. |
