Nowadays, many industrial processes produce waste in the form of particles and dust that, whether
they go to landfill or are suspended in the air, can be highly harmful to the environment and human
health. For this reason, arises an interest in the management of these in order to reuse them. One of
the possible applications is as mineral dust in the manufacture of bituminous mixtures, used mainly in
the construction and maintenance of roads.
There are many studies that demonstrate the viability of using different residues such as concrete or
brick dust, ceramic dust or plastic waste, among others, as filler in the mixtures. In the same way, the
possible use of the two types of ash (white and grey), obtained during the manufacture of recycled
paper, has been analysed from the Civil Laboratory of the Civil and Environmental Engineering
Department.
In particular, the behaviour of different mastics, formed both from conventional and from the two
types of ash, has been compared, mainly against the action of water. When using fillers with very
different specific weights, the dosages have been realized in a volumetric form.
For each mastic, different series of samples have been made, which have been tested using the
“Universal de Caracterización de Ligantes” method developed in the Civil Laboratory itself, which
allows isolating the mastic’s effect on the mixture’s resistance to water action of other variables such
as the type and content of fines. In addition, the compliance with the General Specifications has been
studied in a BBTM 11 B 45 / 80-65M by means of the Indirect Tensile Test. Finally, the variation of the
voids in an AC16 surf 50/70 D mixture has been analysed by replacing part of the natural filler with
one of the two ashes, as would be carried out in the production plant of the mixture.
According to the obtained results in the disintegration resistance, both ashes present an intermediate
behaviour in comparison with the common filler, such as the cement and the calcium carbonate. With
the BBTM discontinuous mixture, the white ash practically verifies the specifications, whereas for the
use of the grey ash an adhesion promoter would be necessary. With respect to the dense mixture
AC16, the filler/bitumen ratios are limited. For the white ash the optimal ratio f/b would be around
0.6 and for the grey, about 1.
It is therefore clear that, with the right quantities, it is possible to use both types of ash in the
manufacture of bituminous mixtures thus contributing to the environmental sustainability. |
