Abstract:

Background: The project Walking the City emerged out of teaching experience obtained in the academic programme Caminar Barcelona.
Caminar Barcelona is an urbanism course which has been taught in the School of Architecture of Barcelona since 2004. Methodology: Three teaching innovations constitute the methodological basis of this academic project. The first innovation is the implementation Barcelona guided tours, led by expert guests. The second innovation is the graphical representation of the city by students and the third is
the introduction of the information and communication technologies [ICT] in order to facilitate the interaction between all actors involved [students, teachers and guests] and the interchange of audiovisual documents and to help creating a common debate. Outcomes: Applied methodology enables students to acquire knowledge in situ and to implement processes of collective reflection and graphical representation of the city, which are later shared on the Walking the city website. The project has received prestigious awards for excellence in university teaching. Conclusions:
The possibility of taking the urban theory to streets gives students a better comprehension of the urban reality. In that sense, multidisciplinary exchange and visual documentation make the learning process more dynamic. |
