En este artículo se pretende mostrar como se está estudiando la red de comunicaciones de época romana en el noroeste peninsular. Este análisis parte, en primer lugar, de la reconstrucción de las vías de comunicación estudiadas hasta nuestros días. Esta red se compone de tres conjuntos diferenciados dependiendo del medio físico por el que transcurran. En primer lugar se han recopilado todas las vías terrestres conocidas, tanto principales como secundarias. Durante la elaboración de esta red de calzadas se ha intentado ajustar lo máximo posible su recorrido a la realidad geográfica existente, utilizando para ello mapas topográficos, ortofotomapas y modelos digitales del terreno, y gracias también a los distintos estudios publicados sobre estos territorios, y a la georreferenciación de distintos elementos arqueológicos significativos, como miliarios, mansios o yacimientos. Posteriormente se recogieron las posibles vías fluviales navegables en época romana. Estos conocimientos se han basado, en primer lugar, en las informaciones que nos ofrecen las fuentes clásicas y, en segundo lugar, en estudios morfológicos, etnográficos e históricos. Finalmente y para completar esta red de comunicaciones, se han recogido las posibles rutas marítimas, teniendo en cuenta las distintas categorías de los puertos marítimos de la costa catalana, y las principales características de la navegación por estas costas. Con la obtención de un modelo vectorial de la red de comunicaciones romana, se procedió a analizar su posible capacidad de movilidad y comunicación. En este sentido, se decidió valorar su Grado de Centralidad calculando el número de vías de comunicación que se relacionaban con cada uno de los distintos núcleos urbanos. Este estudio se relaciona directamente con los estudios de la Teoría Grafos, iniciados por L. Euler ya en el siglo XVIII (James 2002), pero con la particularidad de la distinta valoración de las aristas según el medio de transporte que representan. De este modo el grado de comunicación de los distintos núcleos (nodos) no se valora únicamente por el número de vías que se le relacionan si no que depende a su vez de su capacidad de comunicación por mar o por vías fluviales. El resultado de estos análisis de conectividad ofrece una visión clara de las comunicaciones en estos territorios. Principalmente se pueden dividir en tres grandes grupos dependiendo de su morfología. Un primer grupo lo ofrecen aquellas zonas en las que se encuentra un núcleo principal muy bien comunicado, junto con un territorio cercano también bien comunicado. Un segundo grupo lo forman los grandes núcleos con un elevado grado de centralidad pero sin un territorio bien comunicado. Finalmente, el tercer grupo lo conforman los territorios con una mala comunicatividad.

The intention in writing this article is to show how the network of roads and sea and fluvial routes communications at Roman times are being studied. This analysis starts with the reconstruction of the communication networks that have been studied up to now. This network consists of three different groups according to their physical environment. Firstly, all the known land roads, both main as well as secondary ones, have been collected. Throughout the preparation of this roadway network, its route has been adjusted, as much as possible, to the actual geographical facts, using topographic maps, orthophotomaps and digital land models. Also, the different previous studies, which had been published as well as the geographical references from significant archaeological elements have been a great help. After that, the possible Roman sailing fluvial routes were collected. This knowledge has been based, firstly according to the information given by the classical sources, and secondly, by the morphological, ethnographic and historical studies. Finally, the sea routes were collected taking into account the different categories of the harbours on the Catalan coast and its main sailing characteristics. After the acquisition of a vectorial model of the Roman communication network, the capacity of such communication was analysed. In this case it was decided to assess the Centrality Degree calculating the number of communication networks that were related to each of the different urban centres. This study is directly related to the graph theory, which was started by L. Euler far back in the eighteenth century (James 2002), though having a peculiarity which is the different assessment of the edges according to the means of transport which they belong to. Thus the degree of communication of the different nodes are not assessed only by the number of the routes related to them but it also depends on the capacity of communicating by sea and fluvial routs. The result of these studies show a clear view of the communication networks in this territory. Basically, they can be divided in three important groups, depending on their morphology. One first group would be those areas in which we find a main urban centre very well communicated and it is next to a territory which is as well communicated. A second group is formed by big urban centres with a high degree of centrality but with not such a well communicated territory. And finally, the third group would be those with rather a bad communication.
