The development of urban simulation tools has been one of the most intense scientific areas of research for the last two decades in urban studies. The exploration of both new computational capacities and data processing resources made possible the development of powerful simulation tools based on different mathematic techniques such as cellular automata (CA) and agent-based simulation (ABS). The present work will be focused on the development of multi-scale microsimulation tools as well as on the development and application of new methodologies aimed to integrate urban simulation and planning processes. The final goal is to produce an innovative urban simulation technology capable of assisting common planning processes. The work presented in this document regards the second stage of a broader research program on urban simulation which started with the Master Program in Planning at the University of Porto, Portugal, and will lead to the doctoral research at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia, Spain. In the present stage, a literature survey on urban modeling and cellular automata was made and published on a peer-reviewed journal. The overall goals of this broader research program are stated. A deep reflection is made on the concept of multi-scale approach to urban modeling and several issues regarding the use of CA are discussed. The use of parallel computing and throughput computing is assessed and an application based on the later is developed. A brief overview of the doctoral research is also presented.
