[ANGLÈS] The present document is about the calibration and tuning of a machine for testing the
expansion induced by alkali-silica reaction in concrete specimens affected under triaxial stress
states.
The alkali-silica reaction (ASR) has its origin in the combination of reactive silica present in
some aggregates, with the hydroxyl ions normally present in abundance in the water of the
pores of concrete. If there are conditions with sufficient water, the subsequent reactions
leading to the formation of a highly hydrated gel-type expansive in the aggregate-paste
interface. This gel, after fill the pores the closest pores, ends up producing an expansion of the
interface and the cracks that it occur. The pathologies caused by this expansive reaction in the
concrete structures produces serious damage because they have like a result the degradation
of the mechanical properties of concrete, leaving a less secure structures.
As a consequence, during the last years it has become evident the need of having reliable
numeric models that they allow an adequate model the behavior of the concrete structures
under the influence of the RAS, in order to predict with the sufficient accuracy the evolution of
the structure (in particular the safety factor) and, if necessary, design the mitigation measures
or repair measures that they needed.
In order to calibrate a numeric model is necessary to have enough experimental information
about the various factors that it affecting the development of the RAS in the concrete.
Between these factors, it is known that the stress state of the concrete affects decisively both
the magnitude and the directional distribution of the expansion and, however, there is little
information about this.
With the intention of evaluate how the stress state of concrete affects of the concrete in the
development of the ASR, will take place as a part of a large project, an experimental campaign
divided into two levels of observation. On one hand, there will be a series of test of concrete
cubic specimens on a “true” tri-axial machine with control of temperature and fully saturation
conditions and, secondly, will be studied the expansion at a single interface in the same
exposure conditions.
This thesis presents the works of the author of calibration and tuning of the triaxial testing
machine, along with a study of the ASR (the physico-chemical mechanism. factors that affect it
or the concrete effects) and an analysis on numerical models that currently exist on this
reaction. |

a estados tensionales triaxiales.
