Improvement of the Lufthansa Consulting Network Management decision support models with performances

Technical improvements in the aerospace industry have resulted in the development of higher aircraft efficiency year over year with expected trends pushing for more gains in the near future. The improvement measured by economics and also performance by measures such as payload range capability allows the network planners to assign a large range of aircraft types and sub-types to operate a specific route. The analysis and selection of the optimal aircraft to operate within a specific network domain requires a systematic consideration of many parameters and requirements whereby the technical and economic aspects combine to generate a preferred solution but not necessarily the only solution. Tools and processes are therefore necessary to understand the value drivers that will conclude an aircraft purchase or selection for a particular role. Network planning departments use state of the art tools to undertake extensive calculations for operational research. The gap is the connection of the present range of sophisticated tools to the aircraft performance analysis that is still prepared on the basis of experience. In some cases it is outsourced to operational departments whom provide a deeper analysis by route without considering the interaction of the whole network. This thesis investigates the restrictions presently imposed by numerous network planning solutions and how the technical aspects of aircraft operation can be integrated. The approach must be value added because it should enable a more efficient simulation of aircraft performance and restrictions into the planning process for airlines. The technical and engineering perspective has been generally ignored as a second thought and is worked on a case by case basis. This thesis investigates an integrated approach and suggests a solution while including parameters that need to be considered for a more complete modeling solution.
