Research Access JRA1: Representing Climate change In Physical Experiments
(RECIPE).
Posteriorment s’obté l’averia a cadascuna

The project is defined in the European project Hydralab+,(number 261520) within the
Joint Research Access JRA1: Representing Climate change In Physical Experiments
(RECIPE). Specifically it consists in innovative approaches for representing variability
and unsteadiness in flume facilities. The study of storms actions over the structures is
within this project.
The time evolution of the storm in the sea is directly related to the parameters that affect
to the unsteadiness of the breakwater (Run-up, overtopping...). That is why therefore it
is necessary to study the methodologies adapted to this phenomenon. This phenomenon
has only been studied analytically and it’s necessary to consider the field of physical
model as well.
The aims of the work are three:
- Do a state of the art of synthetic storms which adapt better to the characteristic of real
storm (In this case the Mediterranean sea).
- Design an experiment that allow us verify if the synthetic storms, cause the same
evolution of the damage that the selected storm over the breakwater, which armour
layer is composed for cubes of concrete.
- Review of the literature that allow us: the improvement of the selection of the gravel
for the different layers, the placement of the cubes to the armour layer from the
parameter packing density and new methods to measure the damage of the structure.
The procedure basically, is the research of information related to the topics of project
and select the more relevant aspects in order to proceed latter to their applicability in a
specific physical model.
The selected physical model has been the experiment proposed by van der Meer (1988)
scaled in a 1/3 in the CIEMito flume. It must be composed for 782 cubes of 1,5 cm side
and a density of 2,23 g/cm3, a filter formed by gravel between 6,3 and 9 mm and a core
formed by gravel of 3,55 to 6,3 mm. The breakwater geometry presents a berm of gravel
of 9,0 to 13,2 mm. at the toe of the structure with 3,8 cm of length.
The scale of work respect to the real storm is 1/80, due to the need to induce damage in
the breakwater, to have a common depth (unscaled) for the type of studied structure and
because of the maximum wave height was not a limiting factor.
After the application of the theoretical storms which have been chosen from the state of
the art, it has been discarded the model EPS because it does not fit properly the special
configuration of the real storm. The best theoretical model has been the ETMS with two
configurations, scalene and isosceles, which have been calculated to be generated in
the CIEMito.
It is suggested that the calculation of damage at the structure follows the method
proposed by Gómez-Martín and Medina (2014). This method is based on dividing the
structure in horizontal bands to consider the differences in porosity along the slope.
Afterwards the damage in each of the bands is obtained and the total damage is
calculated joining them.
The work realised leads to the following recommendations:
- Exhaustive control of the preparation of the cubes to obtain a determined density as
close as possible to 2,23 g/cm3
- To measure the damage of the structure following the method proposed by GómezMartín
and Medina (2014) because the porosity change with the evolution of
damage. |
