Theano of Croton is portrayed in numerous biographical accounts as the wife of Pythagoras, a notion that is hard to square with the doctrine of strict celibacy espoused by Pythagorean doxography. However, it is worth noting that some comic sources suggest that the origin of his image of Theano in fact lies in aby now all-too-familiar trope: the attempt to denounce he aster as a debauched hypocrite who did not practise what he preached. |
