This essay explores the hybrid urban space, that is, the hybridization between the physical public
space and the digital space. The latter considered here, are the digital commons, as the Internetbased
social, knowledge and information networks. The object, here, is to define the hybrid urban
space, in between the physical and the digital, to analyze the spontaneous and programmed
processes of hybridization and to pose its definition parameters, as well as the possible project
strategies.
It works as a node in a distributed network, where the local and the global activities and attitudes
converge in a topological place, as both, a cultural fact and a political space. Thus, it dynamizes and
channels the networked information and knowledge exchange, towards the collective intelligence. This
hybrid space, is managed through participation processes and channeled by civic cooperatives to
guarantee the collective management of these urban commons. Its mutability and adaptability, in
regards with the physical, digital and social environmental inputs, may be solved by the use of either
advanced or low-cost technologies. |
