Flash heat events have been defined recently, in 2012, as a rapid increase of temperature and drop of humidity, as a duration higher than few minutes and lower than 2 consecutive days. Flash heat events are a phenomena between the micro and macro scales, between heat burst events (few minutes affecting few kilometers, AMS) and heat wave events (more than 2 consecutive days affecting thousand of kilometers, WMO). The analysis of the great and sudden increase of temperature during some hours, and the possible impacts in the different type of air navigation is the main aim of this job. |

A nivell internacional l’Organització Meteorològica
superior a uns minuts.

The definition of heat wave varies depending of the world geographical area. In
Spain, for example, the Spanish meteorological agency (AEM) defines heat
wave as a period of at least 3 days with temperatures exceeding 32.3°C.
Internationally the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) considers that to
talk about heat wave temperature should be abnormally high for at least 2
days.
On the other hand, the American Meteorological Society defines heat burst as
a rise of temperature to abnormally high levels that lasts a few minutes.
Analyzing the definition of heat wave and heat burst can be observed that
between the two phenomena there is a temporary gap which is not defined by
any known phenomenon. This vacuum is not only temporary, it’s also spatial as
a heat wave covers large areas of land while a heat burst encompasses just a
few kilometers. To fill this gap, considering the observations of meteorologist
Jordi Mazón, I present the phenomenon "Flash Heat" as the event which has
intermediate characteristics between a heat wave and a heat burst in reference
to the duration of time and the space spanned.
Therefore the main objective of this project is to give a sample of the existence
of this new weather phenomenon thanks to the analysis of a real case. Also to
explain how the flash heat event develops to get a rise in temperature to
abnormally high values for a period of less than 2 days. Affecting an area of
land included between the covering area of a heat wave and a heat burst. This
analysis is carried out by studying data from weather stations in the area of
Crete (Greece) and by studying a numerical simulation of the ambient
conditions to analyze the atmospheric changes in the affected area.
The other goal of this project is to analyze the possible effects that can bring to
the aeronautics world to fly over an area which is suffering a Flash Heat. Since
this involves some rapid changes in basic factors as pressure, density and
temperature that can adversely affect the lift and the flight operations of
aircrafts.
This second analysis is carried out by studying how flight conditions interact
with the factors which vary in a flash heat event, always taking as reference the
flash heat event studied. |
