[ANGLÈS] Corrosion is a major cause of deterioration in reinforced concrete structures. Reinforcing bars
structural concrete may suffer corrosion because of lack of adequate concrete cover, not suitable
for the environment in which the structure is exposed, or when different aggressive processes take
place in form of chemical abrasive attacks. On the other hand, fatigue is a failure mode of the
structure or material, which occurs as a result of repeated cyclic loads of stress lower than the
ultimate strength, causing the appearance of
cracks up to the material rupture.
The binding of these two factors is the corrosion fatigue, which can be defined as the reduction
of the ability of a metal to withstand cyclic loading or repeated, which produce the breakage of the
protective oxide layers which prevent corrosion, with a faster. It is important to do fatigue test to
the reinforcement bars in order to correctly define the useful
life of the structure due to the degradation that may occur.
Several studies have been made to analyze the effects of corrosion in bars of different
diameters. In addition to that, fatigue tests simulations have been done on the bars, but not how do
they affect the entire reinforced concrete structure.
In this dissertation a numerical model developed by the Department of Construction
Engineering will be applied in which we will simulate fatigue testing of steel bars which are subjected to different
degrees of corrosion. The aim is to compare the results obtained by the numerical model and a real
test. Once the correct behaviour of the model has been checked, the slabs of reinforced concrete
bridges fatigue test simulation will be done. The results obtained are SN curves in which by
increasing the stress which the bar supports cyclically, gives the number of cycles that can support
the bar. Thus, the life of the structure can be estimated from the number of cyclic loads which steel
bars of reinforced concrete can hold. |
