[ANGLÈS] Reducing environmental impact is becoming a major issue in harbours,
new environmental regulations are more stringent and harbours must maintain a good
image, which does not affect the nearby urban areas and that also helps to improve their
competitiveness compared to other harbours. In the case of the main Spanish harbours,
the responsible organization for these aspects is Puertos del Estado, which in 2005
passed a set of recommendations for maritime constructions ROM 5.1. "Calidad de las
Aguas Litorales en Áreas Portuarias", which anticipates for the harbour system the
main conclusions and implications on water quality that the 2000/60/EC directive
(known as the Water Framework Directive, WFD) is pursuing.
The water quality in a harbour is highly influenced by circulation patterns. These
circulation patterns dictate the renewal’s time of the harbour’s waters; the lower this
renewal time, the lower the concentration of the pollutant in the harbour.
The aim of this thesis is to characterize and quantify the flows in the Tarragona
Harbour, and identify the main constraints and driving mechanisms that determine those
flows. To make this characterization oceanographic data are available (currents, wind,
surface levels and physicochemical parameters) measured in 3 field campaigns, which
allow to highlight seasonal variations. Are carried out various types of analysis
(statistical, comparative spectral, EOF's) with the campaigns data to establish
relationships between the currents and the mechanisms that determine them. (...) |
