Abstract:
|
TheMUSEproject ("Mechanics of Unsaturated Soils for Engineering") was a Research Training Network funded by the European Commission from 2004 until 2008. The network produced a unique data set of laboratory test results on a wide range of unsaturated soil types. Work on constitutive modelling involved re-evaluated existing constitutive models and indicated that even the latest coupled models failed to capture some
aspects of observed behaviour. This led to new models being developed to attempt to capture more advanced aspects of behaviour. Developments in numerical modelling involved implementing new algorithms and new
models within existing finite element codes and the development ofa new parallel, object-oriented finite element code for unsaturated soil. An important part of the programme was the Applications theme where the research
developments were applied to real problems of industrial significance, working closely with the industrial partners ofMUSE. The MUSE partners were involved in a wide range ofprojects across Europe involving slope
stability, containment ofnuclear waste, embankments and earth dams and seismic analysis ofdams and response to ground vibrations. |
