Large-scale microalgae cultures grown in photobioreactors are often either light-limited or light-inhibited. Cascading photobioreactors aim at solving this problem by bringing together a high microalgal biomass concentration, a geometrically thin culture and significant turbolence which protects the microalgae photosynthetic system by exposing the cells to an alternative light intensity. The present project deals with the development of a computational fluid dynamic model of a cascading photobioreactor to investigate the macromixing influence of its design and operating parameters. |
