Evaluation of foot defects in the "cavall pirinenc català"
Parés Casanova, Pere-Miquel; Argeric, N.; Farrés, M.; Sorroche, A.
The establishment of a plan to improve the 'Cavall Pirinenc Català' breed requires its revious characterization. Our characterization is focused on analysis of hooves defects. Observations were done on 4 summer grazing areas in the Catalan Pyrenees and re-Pyrenees. In total, 161 adult and subadult females and 24 males were studied. The most frequently etected defects are wall fissures (16.1%), mainly oncentrated in the forelimbs (2.5%). Low heels are the most common defect (44.6%). There are few animals with severe defects, although a low percentage of animals present hoof rotations (6.0%).
